Library Media Specialist Certification (UW-Milwaukee)
The University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee offers a complete program to attain certification from the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction as a school library media specialist. In the state of Wisconsin, this program requires that the student has, or is eligible for, a classroom teaching license in another field before application for the Initial Library Media License (902) can be made. The MLIS degree is required when the candidate applies for the second level of the certification, the Professional 902 License, no later than 5 years after the Initial license begins.
Total credits required for completion: 12 core classes plus portfolio
For the 902 Library Media Specialist or 91 Library Media Supervisor license:
- Download the License Application, Initial In-State Teaching or Pupil Services from the DPI website.
- Complete application, attach check and mail to:

Your Certification Program Plan and ePortfolio will be examined to assure you've met all requirements for certification. Your application will then be verified and forwarded to the UWM Certification Officer for official signature. The Certification Office will send your application and check on to the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction. The Certification office will send you a Verification of Program Completion form.
